Before you sign up for 2027, it is worth doing the maths. This guide puts current UK gym prices from PureGym and The Gym Group next to the cost of a home gym, shows the month each BrainGain setup pays for itself, and is honest about when a gym is still the better choice.

The UK has 12.1 million gym members according to LeisureDB's 2026 report. Many of them sign up in January. In a 2025 survey of 2,000 UK adults, 24% said they had joined a gym as a New Year's resolution. Of those, 18% stopped going within one to two months, and only 4% never stopped. The membership is cheap. The trip there is what people quit.

The maths leaves out two things that favour the home gym. Travel: the bus fare, the fuel or the 40 minutes there and back. And the people in your house: one home gym serves a couple, a flatmate or a teenager, while every gym membership is per person. Against a central London membership at £47.99 a month, the £499.99 Core Gym Bundle pays for itself in under 11 months for one person.

Our pick: the Intermediate Gym Bundle

SmartBells Intermediate Gym Bundle

£399.00 · was £689.99 · 24 kg Evo dumbbells · 18 kg kettlebell · stand · Core Bench · 24-month warranty

The Intermediate Gym Bundle covers everything a three-day strength plan needs. The 24 kg SmartBells Evo go from 2.5 to 24 kg per hand with a twist of the handle. The 18 kg kettlebell adjusts from 4 to 18 kg. The Core Bench has 7 backrest positions and folds to 87 × 29 × 50 cm. Add the stand and the whole gym fits in a corner. BrainGain's guide below shows the stand going together.

On a tighter budget: Core Bench + 18 kg Kettlebell

£189.99 · was £249.99

The Core Bench + 18 kg Kettlebell set pays for itself in about seven months. Presses, rows, swings, goblet squats and split squats from one folding bench and one kettlebell. Tech Alchemy's review below covers the kettlebell.

Tech Alchemy reviews the BrainGain 18 kg adjustable kettlebell.

For heavier lifters: Core Gym Bundle

£499.99 · was £879.99 · 40 kg Original dumbbells · 18 kg kettlebell · stand · Core Bench

The Core Gym Bundle swaps in the 40 kg SmartBells Original, 5 to 40 kg per hand with 17 settings. Pick this if you already row or lunge with more than 24 kg.

The cheapest gym is the one you keep using. For most people that is the one in the spare room.

When a gym membership is still the right call

A gym is the better choice if you want treadmills, rowers and bikes, if classes keep you going, or if you squat and deadlift with a heavy barbell every week. It also suits people who need to leave the house to train. Plenty of people do both: a cheap off-peak membership for cardio and a home setup for the strength days. If you go that way, our Black Friday or Boxing Day guide shows when to buy the kit.

How much training do you need?

The NHS guidelines for adults are 150 minutes of moderate activity a week, plus strength exercises for all the major muscle groups on at least two days. Two or three 30-minute sessions with dumbbells, a kettlebell and a bench cover the strength part. You do not need a gym for that.

The verdict

A low-cost UK gym costs around £190 to £310 a year outside London and more in the city. A BrainGain home gym is a one-off cost that pays for itself in 7 to 19 months for one person, and in half that for two. Our pick for 2027 is the Intermediate Gym Bundle at £399: dumbbells, kettlebell, stand and folding bench, with a 24-month warranty. Keep a gym if you need cardio machines or classes. For strength, the spare room wins.
