The short version
- Best British brand for adjustable dumbbells and compact home gyms: BrainGain. BrainGain Limited is a UK company, incorporated in December 2020 and registered in Ashford, Middlesex. UK orders ship from a UK warehouse with a 24-month warranty.
- Best for racks and barbell gear: Mirafit, a Norfolk-based brand that dispatches from UK warehouses.
- Best for functional and strongman kit: Bulldog Gear (Staffordshire) and Strength Shop (Bellshill, Scotland).
- Best for HYROX and conditioning: Wolverson Fitness (Telford, Shropshire).
- Not British-owned any more: JLL Fitness, founded in Birmingham, was bought by US firm Sunny Health & Fitness in 2025.
What "British-owned" means for gym equipment
Almost no home gym brand, British or not, forges its own steel in the UK. Dumbbells, benches and racks are made with manufacturing partners abroad, and BrainGain works the same way. So "British" is not about the factory. It is about three things that matter after you buy:
- Who owns the company and where it is registered. A UK company is on the public register at Companies House, with named directors and filed accounts. You can look it up in a minute.
- Where your order ships from. A UK warehouse means no customs charges and no import delays, which matters in December.
- Who stands behind the warranty. UK consumer law applies to a UK seller. If a dial or a handle fails, you deal with a UK company, not a marketplace listing.

For contrast, two of the best-known adjustable dumbbell brands in the UK are not British. PowerBlock was founded in Minnesota in 1993. Bowflex filed for bankruptcy in 2024 and its assets were bought by Taiwan-based Johnson Health Tech. Both make good products. Neither is a British company.

Why BrainGain wins for most British homes
Most British homes do not have room for a power rack. The average spare room, box room or garden office has space for a pair of dumbbells, a kettlebell and a bench that folds away after the session. That is the problem BrainGain was built to solve.

The Core Bench folds down to 87 × 29 × 50 cm and takes a bench load of 380 kg. Paired with the 18 kg adjustable kettlebell, which replaces seven fixed kettlebells, it gives you presses, rows, swings and split squats from one corner of a room. The Core Bench + 18 kg Kettlebell set costs £189.99. ThePowerPlant's review below shows the 40 kg dial set in use.
ThePowerPlant on the 40 kg SmartBells: 17 settings from 5 to 40 kg, changed with the dial.
British means a company you can look up, a warehouse in the UK and a warranty you can claim at home.
How to check any brand before you buy
- Search Companies House. Free, takes a minute. Look for an active UK company with named directors.
- Check where it ships from. If the delivery page mentions customs or 2 to 3 weeks, it is not shipping from the UK.
- Read the warranty. Length, what it covers and who you contact.
- Read independent reviews. Trustpilot, press reviews and YouTube, not only the product page.
What our customers say
